How much space do you need? Then we’ll tell you what drives you need. Please let us know if you have questions or need help. Synology Hyper Backup to C2 or BackBlaze B2 would cover this requirement.īest of luck. In addition, you need to back this data up to an offsite location, with versioning enabled so accidentally/maliciously deleted/changed files can be recovered. This would give you 60TB of useable space and would use 25% (20TB) for parity so one drive can fail without data loss. I’d suggest a new four bay Synology with 4 x 20TB hard drives configured in SHR1. The saying is “one is none”.įourth - you need some new hardware with her data generation rates. I suggest looking at the 3-2-1 backup rule (Google). If so, you need to invest in a proper storage strategy to mitigate data loss as it could negatively impact her business moving forward. Third - I’m assuming this is your wife’s business. You’re currently using your NAS like an external hard drive, which is not a correct application of the hardware. NAS devices are meant to build an array that spans multiple drives and typically their is some type of parity calculation or mirroring that allows at least one drive to fail without data loss or interruption. The only time you should do this is if a hard drive has failed or if you’re upgrading etc. Second - NAS devices are not built to “swap” drives out on any regular basis. Expect this to cost an excessive amount of money and use it as a lesson on why a proper data management and backup strategy is necessary. Find a professional recovery service and get that drive mailed to them ASAP, especially if your wife’s business reputation depends on it. I recommend not touching any drives you need to recover data from again as every time you plug them in you risk data recovery being more difficult/impossible. I wanted to clarify a few things.įirst - sorry for your situation. Hi, there’s some good and some not so good advise on here. Then called me about 10 min later and said there was nothing they could do and to send the drive to a 3rd party recovery company. But I will make a new post in the future about that most likely will seek more of your advise and knowledge.Ģnd update: Synology remoted in to the system without the drive installed. We also spoke about how we will handle old files. I also spoke to the wife about what’s going on and the wrath is on hold unless we can’t get the files. They setup a ticket and a specialist will be in contact. I spoke to Synology tonight and it was after hours. Once we get through this hurdle we will be addressing our storage plan and giving it an full overhaul with redundancies and backups. This was not the case and I can’t thank you enough for your help and support. I normally try to research and do things the right way. Update: First, I’d like to thank everybody for their help and advise, while still being nice. *I am not a big computer person and do not truely know what I’m doing and probably am misusing this NAS. So am I doing something wrong or not doing something? Am I screwed? Please help. Never was it plugged in long enough to erase 5tb of data and I was extremely careful of not allowing anything like that to happen(I read all prompts slowly) ![]() I don’t understand how there’s nothing there. I installed the file server package and can’t find the pictures anywhere on the drive. ![]() So I go through the process of removing 2021 and install 2022. Tonight she says she needs 2022 installed again. So I removed it and put in the new 2021 drive and went through the setup. I selected to remove the 2022 drive, in about 30 sec it said it was good to go. I had storage pool 1 with volume one for 2022 and pool 2 with volume one for 2023. She wanted to get another hard drive and transfer 2021 pictures to it from a external drive. ![]() I’ve never had to remove the previous year until last month. 1 is the current year 2023 and 1 is last year 2022 My wife is a photographer and we backup her photos on a DS220.
