This cascades, often leading to the classic "two buses at once" bus bunch. That causes there to be an extra rider at the next stop, adding another small delay. Some more about bus bunching: Some small random fluctuation, like a red light, brings a bus ~30 s off schedule. If Western BRT comes, it will cover all of 49 and 49B, although probably not all of 49A. BRT isn't subject to the same level of delay that local bus routes are, and you can express a delayed BRT vehicle (which you can't do with local buses), so routes can be longer than local bus routes. The reason why Western is a big place people propose BRT (true BRT, not the half-assed thing they're doing on Jeffery) is because of that length. (This is what brings about bus bunching, which people hate.) There's a 49, 49A, and 49B basically because a single 49 would be impossible to keep on a schedule, and Western isn't the only place the CTA does this (see also: Halsted (8/8A), Kedzie (52/52A), Pulaski (53/53A), Cicero (54/54A/54B), Garfield/55th (55, 55A, 55N), Milwaukee (56/56A), 63rd (63/63W), Lawrence (81/81W), Central (85/85A), Harlem (90/90N), and 95th (95E/95W). The longer a bus route is, the harder it is to keep it on schedule, stoplights and rider fluctuations and all that being what they are. Like, really, really long the longest continuous street in the city limits. Whats the deal with the 49 and 49 "north" routes? Why break it in half?
